Your Step by Step Guide to the Post Weekend DETOX

Hi lovelies! I hope you all had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend!

If you didn’t stay as healthy as planned this weekend, don’t dwell on it. Holiday weekends can easily lead to lots of over indulging. There’s happy hour on Friday, a party on Saturday, Sunday brunch, and the list goes on. Even the healthiest person can easily be thrown off track. All the excess carbs, fat, salt, sugar and booze can leave us feeling bloated, tired, hungry and guilty by Monday Tuesday.

Now is the perfect time to give your body exactly what it needs. Reestablish a healthy balance. Over the next four days, take extra care of your body. Fill it with nourishing foods high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and as many nutrients as possible.

Step 1: Be kind to yourself. Give yourself a break. You indulged because you were having fun – there is nothing to regret. Treat yourself with kind words and move forward.

Step 2: Flush it out. Start your day with a large glass of water or a warm cup of tea. Then aim to drink at least 100 ounces of water throughout the day.

Step 3: Eat clean. Plan out your meals and stick to it. Focus on nutrient dense, whole foods that are high in vitamins and minerals. Now is not the time to allow yourself (another) treat.

Step 4: Supplement. Take a multivitamin and Omega-3 supplement to ensure you are getting all your nutrients.

Step 5: Sweat it out. Get plenty of exercise over the next few days. Up the intensity so you can sweat out the toxins.

The Real Meaning of Memorial Day

Memorial Day has come to signify a summer kick off for many of us and we celebrate by drinking, partying and BBQing with family and friends. But the real meaning of this day off work often gets lost in the holiday festivities.

Memorial Day is a time to honor the heroes who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom; an opportunity to express gratitude for those who have died protecting our country.

Today, enjoy your BBQs and parties with loved ones, but just take a moment to remember theses who can’t do the same.

Skinny Tips for Memorial Day Weekend

memorialdayAhhh Memorial Day Weekend…There’s nothing like the upcoming 3 day weekend to kick off the summer!

There’s a lot riding on it. And in San Diego, it’s typically sunny enough for a swim suit. AHHH bikini season has officially begun! Regardless, there will be plenty of BBQing and hanging by the pool/beach/bay with friends and family.

Whatever your weekend has in store, I do have a few skinny tips for ya…

What to DRINK?

dreamstime_87343962Well, If you’re at a bar order my new FAVE skinny cocktail (or make it at home).

Ask for clear tequila (like Patron) with soda water, a splash of grapefruit juice, and extra lime. You can also garnish with cucumber and mint for a more refreshing beverage.

Tequila is one of the few liquors that is not made from a starch or grain (it’s made from the Agave plant). When combined with the lime and grapefruit, it does not cause your blood sugar to spike so it helps curb those typical late night junk food cravings.

 

What to EAT?

ss_RU185491There’s a good chance you’ll be at a BBQ. So my advice? Load up on lean protein like grilled chicken, kabobs, corn on the cob, mixed green salad, and fruit salad. Or go bun-less with your burger.

Worried about having healthy options? Bring your own.

Are you hosting? Grill up my tasty basil feta turkey burgers for your guests.

Remember at a party there are typically four categories we can indulge in: booze, bread, snacks and dessert. Limit yourself to one or two of the four, but never more! For me, it will be booze and maybe dessert if it looks worth it. Sorry I’m not sorry.

It’s a party weekend and we all want to have fun, that’s for sure. But we also want to look good in our bathing suits, so be mindful. Want to avoid the dreaded belly bloat? My advice on that here.

What to DO?

Exercise! Just because it’s a holiday weekend doesn’t mean you get to be lazy. Schedule in early morning workouts on at least 2 of the days and be active as possible throughout the weekend. If you’re at a pool, get in the water! At the beach? Try stand up paddle boarding or beach cruising!

Most of all have fun, be safe, and welcome the summer season a little skinnier.

The 10 Commandments… of Snacking

1 // Thou Shalt Practice Portion Control // Choose a snack, measure out ONE serving and put it into a bowl/dish/plate/ziploc bag. Leave the kitchen and sit down to enjoy it. If you eat straight from the box or while standing at the kitchen counter, I can guarantee you’ll reach for more. When in doubt, measure it out!

2 // Thou Shalt Fill in the Gaps // Use snack time to fill in holes in your diet. If you didn’t get any veggies in at lunch, have them as a snack.

3 // Thou Shalt Acknowledge Cravings // If you are having a legit craving, satisfy it in a small way and move on. Don’t ignore it.

4 // Thou Shalt Keep It Snack Sized // A snack is not a meal. Keep snacks between 150-200 calories, especially if you are trying to lose weight.

5 // Thou Shalt Fuel Your Workout // Pre and post workout snacks should combine protein and carbs to build and repair muscle and replenish energy levels. Post snack ideas found here.

6 // Thou Shalt Drink Water // Drink a full glass of water with each snack. The water will keep you full and satisfied without adding calories. More on other benefits of water here.

7 // Thou Shalt Savor Snack Time // Make snack time last at least 15 minutes and really savor each bite. If you scarf down your snack, you’ll be reaching for something else immediately after.

8 // Thou Shalt Choose Wisely // Don’t just reach for a handful of crackers. Think about choosing a good combination of protein, carbs, and fat to keep you feeling full and allow your blood sugar levels to stabilize so you don’t crash and burn.

9 // Thou Shalt Pack A Snack // Make sure that you always have a healthy snack on hand. Keep protein bars or a small bag of almonds in your bag so that you always have healthy on-the-go option.

10 // Thou Shalt Snack // Snacks are important, even/especially when you’re trying to lose weight. You’ll be less likely to reach for high-calorie treats or eat more at mealtime. So, don’t skip your snack time.

Do Something Uncomfortable Today

For me, the weekdays are like clockwork. I go to work, workout, come home, walk my dogs, make dinner, clean up, read, and go to bed.

BORING! Life is too short to be so predictable. But you know what? I am a creature of habit and I love routine.

Well, I’m working on stepping outside the box these days. Doing some things I don’t normally do. Like: once a week (during the week) my hubby and I declare a date night. The key has been that it must be on a weekday. Weekends are mostly playtime for us, so making that switch is honestly a big change. It brightens my week and gives us something to look forward to. That designated time together, without the TV on, has been miraculous.

I know that it’s something so little. But all these little things add up and in the end make us who we are. They change us. Our mentality, our spirit, our perspective,

Doing something uncomfortable means something different for everyone. For me, it’s getting out of my routine and changing things up. And yes, adding a date night means I am forced to schedule in a rest day. Something that also makes me uncomfortable.

Doing something uncomfortable could look like:

smiling at a stranger

adopting a puppy

speaking up at work

quitting your job // starting a business

inviting someone to lunch

saying no // not over-committing

saving your money

joining a new gym // taking a break from working out

reading instead of watching tv

packing your lunches

I Met Lorna Jane!

That’s right, you guys. I met Lorna Janelwaamttneayxho20ccpm

I was walking in La Jolla, near one of her newest stores with my hubby and I was talking about how much I loved Lorna Jane’s philosophy on Active Living. I mentioned that it was an Australian company and then this gal walking toward us points behind me and says, “you know that’s her, right?!”

WHAT!? Are you joking me? I turned around and immediately spotted the bombshell blonde, Lorna Jane Clarkson. Of course, I had to go over and meet her! And to top it off she was handing out goodie bags full of products and signing copies of her new book, MORE.photo 2

She was the sweetest lady, and so genuine. Not to mention her rockin’ bod. I’m just bummed I didn’t think to ask for a photo with her!

Lorna Jane is such an inspiration to me, and I was honestly star struck to meet her. Her clothing line is absolutely adorable and my new fave to wear when I workout. But it’s her philosophy on Active Living and her Move/Nourish/Believe movement that I’m so inspired by.

Oil Pulling – Are you for real?

Oil pulling is every health/wellness bloggers dream right now. The new fad. Just like everyone else, I was super skeptical, so I gave it a shot.

Wait. Back up.

WTF is oil pulling anyway?

Oil pulling is an ancient Indian remedy used to detox. It’s supposed to draw out oral bacteria in your mouth that leads to plaque buildup, gingivitis and bad breath. It’s also shown to strengthen and whiten your teeth, and prevent cavities. And, although it’s not yet scientifically proven, it has been known to help alleviate hangovers, reduce headaches, and support general detoxification of the entire body.

How do you do it? 

First thing in the morning, before eating, drink a full glass of water. Then swish 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes. Avoid swallowing any oil while swishing because then the toxins will just go right back into your system.

Hah! Sounds ridiculous, right?

Well I tried it. Yup. For several weeks, I’ve been swishing coconut oil in my mouth for 20 minutes on my way to work.

So is it total bogus?

Well, I wouldn’t go that far. I’d call it an all-natural mouthwash. It did seem to whiten my teeth and freshen my breath. But that’s about it.

I tried it after a night out and I’m sad to report it did NOT cure my hangover. Womp Womp.

Overall, I’d recommend oil pulling only as a natural mouthwash, if your into that. Since the detoxifying effects aren’t scientifically proven yet, I’m gonna stick with my regular Crest mouthwash. I just HAD to give it a shot.

JayZ and Solange: what REALLY happened

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I idolize the power couple, Beyoncé and Jay Z. So of course I had to express my (skinny) opinion on the recent scandal.

For those of you that have been living under a rock, click here for the low down courtesy of TMZ and watch the elevator footage here courtesy of MTV.

So, it’s unclear what triggered the fight. I know, it appears that Jay Z said something about Bey or Solange and the sis just went off on him. But I won’t believe it.

Let’s think about this scenario realistically. They are leaving a Met Gala after party. It’s likely they’ve all had a few drinks… and then some.

Jay is a smart man, never attempts to fight back. And Bey stays out of it completely. I chalk it all up to Solange being too drunk.

I love how the media eats this up. I mean, Solange did try to beat the **** of out him, but I would not assume it was HOVs fault. We all know how cray cray some girls can get after too many cocktails…

Yes, I know, I’m standing up for him. But still. Lots can happen when people are under the influence, and honestly, maybe S was just having a bad night.

Let’s give the power couple a break!

Sick Day + Natural Cold Remedies

photoUgh. I’m sad to report the cold I’ve been trying to avoid all weekend has finally caught up with me.

Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and getting regular exercise (+ washing your hands!!) definitely helps keep immunity boosted throughout the year, but sometimes we still need a little help.

And today, I’ll take all the help I can get.

I’ve found a few simple, natural home remedies to share which can help shorten the duration and intensity of illness and have you up and running in no time. Yes, please!!

|| Garlic || This natural antifungal and antibacterial can help kick almost any illness to the curb. Garlic loses its potency when cooked, so it’s best taken raw during times of sickness. Try a garlic shot: 1-2 cloves of very finely minced garlic in a very small glass of water and drink it quickly in one sip. Just make sure to brush up afterwards, no one likes garlic breath!

|| Coconut Oil || Its naturally high levels of lauric acid can help boost the immune system and ward off illness. It can be taken with food, melted into hot tea or eaten straight out of the jar.

|| Apple Cider Vinegar || Adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice, to a glass of water helps to alkalinize the body. Creating an alkaline environment helps kill bacteria and viruses. Start drinking it at the first sign of illness and repeat several times a day until the symptoms subside.

|| Warm Liquids || Homemade broth, hot lemon water, and herbal teas all help boost the immune system and soothe you when feeling sick. Ginger is good for sinus trouble and congestion. Chamomile helps reduce inflammation and calms nerves, which can result in better sleep. Homemade cinnamon tea made with one tablespoon of cinnamon and one teaspoon of honey helps reduce coughing and congestion.

|| Elderberry Syrup || Elderberries have been used in traditional folk medicine to help prevent and treat the symptoms of both colds and flus. The berries are rich in the anti-inflammatory anthocyanin, as well as antioxidant flavonoids, which help combat illness. When choosing a brand, make sure to avoid any containing preservatives, natural flavorings or high-fructose corn syrup.

Remember, prevention is always the best remedy. Be sure to check with your health care provider to rule out any serious illness.
